Die Sphinx ("The
Sphinx") was a German monthly theosophical magazine edited by Dr. Wilhelm Hübbe-Schleiden, and which appeared without fail from January
1886 to June 1896 (with the exception of January and February 1892).
Initially, it was conceived to be
the magazine of the Theosophical Lodge of Germany, but after this Lodge was
disintegrated because of the Hodgson report, the magazine became the official
publication of the Psychological Society of Munich, and then between 1892 and
1893, it became the magazine of the German Theosophical Association, and since 1894 it has
become the official publication of the German Theosophical Society.
In this magazine were published
topics on metaphysics, mysticism, philosophy and religious studies of the East,
and although the magazine had a scientific presentation, it also showed the
theosophical view on these issues.
Die Sphinx exerted a great
influence on the theosophical movement in Germany and contributed significantly
to the creation of new lodges, and especially for the formation of the
German Theosophical Society.
And in addition to
Hübbe-Schleiden, other researchers who also contributed with their articles
were: Franz Hartmann,
Carl Kiesewetter, Carl du Prel, Gustav Meyrinck, M.F. Sebaldt, Eduard von
Hartmann, Ernest Haeckel, Lazar von Hellenbach, and Max Dessoir.
And the occultist Rudolf Tischner
mentions that the magazine Neue Metaphysische Rundschau assumed the succession
from 1897.
