CHARLES LEADEATER AND ANNIE BESANT CLAIMED THAT JUPITER'S MOONS ARE PHYSICALLY INHABITED

In the first chapter of their book "Man: From Whence, How and Whither," Charles Leadbeater and Annie Besant stated:

« Jupiter is not yet inhabited, but its moons are, by beings with dense physical bodies. »
(p.7)

OBSERVATIONS

This book was first published in 1913, but sixty years later, the space exploration carried out in the 1970s proved that the claim made by Charles Leadbeater and Annie Besant was false.

Some scientists theorize that there could be oceans beneath the surface of some of Jupiter's moons (mainly Europa) where some form of physical life could have developed.

But that is not what Leadbeater and Besant meant; rather, the couple claimed that through their clairvoyance they had visited the extraterrestrial humans who inhabit the moons of Jupiter.

And I can assure you of this because Leadbeater and Besant said something similar in another book of theirs entitled "The Inner Life" Vol. 2 (1912) where they claimed that through their clairvoyance they visited Mars and Mercury and saw the Martians cultivating flowers and the Mercurials having to make great leaps to be able to enter inside their houses.

But the space explorations that took place a few decades later proved that those claims were also mere fantasies imagined by this couple.

The thing is, Leadbeater and Besant accepted the prevailing belief of their time that the other planets in the solar system were also physically inhabited like Earth, and based on this false belief they imagined those accounts and assured their followers that they were "true clairvoyant visions".

The Theosophical Society of Adyar, in an attempt to conceal the charlatanism of Leadbeater and Besant, stopped publishing the book "Man: From Whence, How and Whither".

And in the book "The Inner Life II" they removed the text where Leadbeater and Besant talk about Martians and Mercurials.

But the old editions of these books are proof that Leadbeater and Besant did indeed assert those enormous lies.

CONCLUSION

This is further proof of the enormous charlatanism of Charles Leadbeater and Annie Besant.

LIFE ON MARS ACCORDING TO ALFRED SINNETT

1. Alfred Sinnett held the mistaken belief that Mars and Mercury are part of the Earth's planetary chain.

This led Sinnett to conclude that the humanity currently developing on Earth had previously done so on Mars and would do so in the future on Mercury — all in a physical sense.

In other words: terrestrial humans used to reincarnate on Mars, but those who had evolved sufficiently were now reincarnating on Earth, and in the future, the most advanced among them would begin to reincarnate on Mercury.

That is why Sinnett wrote in his book "Esoteric Buddhism" (1883):

« Mars in a state of entire obscuration now as regards the human life-wave. »
(Chapter 7)

This means there is no human life on Mars, though Sinnett implied that animal and plant life do exist there.

2. However, in his book "The Growth of the Soul" (1896), Sinnett changed his claim, stating that humans do live on Mars, but they are the most despicable ones who could not continue their evolution on Earth:

« A large portion of the present human family has actually lived on Mars — where, if we could but visit the planet now, as, indeed, some of our more advanced companions can and do, in the appropriate vehicle of consciousness while out of the physical body, we should still find the least advanced, — the dregs of the family, — still hanging on there. »
(Chapter 10)

3. Sinnett had been using mediums to obtain further "occult information," and starting in 1909, he began utilizing the services of the medium Robert King (who was a charlatan) and who told him lies.

In his "Autobiography," Sinnett recounted:

« One November night [1909], King heard a new voice claiming to be that of Laplace — the astronomer who had given me information about Mars, its inhabitants, and its canals. Up to that point, King did not go into a trance with me, but rather repeated what he heard being said. »
(p. 57)

This led Sinnett to further expand upon his "discoveries" regarding life on Mars, which he set forth in a pamphlet titled "Expanded Theosophical Knowledge" (1919), which later was incorporated into his book "Collected Fruits of Occult Teaching" (1919) where he once again altered his claim, stating that the humans living on Mars were not the most despicable, but rather the most primitive:

« At present we shall find it impossible to understand the conditions of life on the super-physical planets, and we may leave them out of account for the moment; but on the three physical, including Mars behind us and Mercury in advance of us, the human family is now distributed, part of it already established on Mercury, part left behind on Mars.

The explanation is simple. While the great majority swept forward to this earth, the laggard remnant not yet qualified for incarnation here remains on the planet Mars, a superior vanguard already getting forward to the planet in advance.

The retarded condition of the Martian remnant—counted, of course, by a fairly large number of millions—consists of those who have (reverting to my former explanation about consciousness) failed to make the exertions required for the acquisition of superior vehicles.

There is no vehicle of human consciousness on this earth amongst even the lowest savages that is not definitely superior in some important ways to the vehicles of consciousness now inhabiting Mars.

Strange to say, as often happens on the downward arc, some capacities are still active amongst them, which enable them to do things that we ourselves, in spite of our superior development, are unable to accomplish.

The Martian people can handle matter by arts that we, to a certain extent, have lost, though the use of such arts does not represent superior intelligence any more than a spider’s capacity to make a web that no human art could imitate, represents intellectual superiority on the part of the spider.

Morally, the condition of the Martian people is below any level that we can easily comprehend.Their forms are to our more cultivated taste grotesquely ugly, and they practically exemplify a saying applied with less appropriateness to some savage races of our own globe: “manners they have none, and their customs are beastly.”

The animal life on Mars is at a low level, corresponding to that of the people. It is purely reptilian in its character, and the development of taste amongst the people may be imagined from the fact that their food consists of the blood of the reptiles swarming in the vast inland lakes commonly called canals, with which the habitable portions of the planet are covered.

Even amongst the Martians the evolutionary law which presses gradually on the multitude is slowly working. Some Egos —for already the Martians must be thought of as human— gradually establish claims on a better vehicle of consciousness than those around them, and then they become qualified for incarnation on this earth, and are brought over under the guidance of appropriate emissaries from the White Lodge in batches sometimes of fairly considerable number.

I have heard of a recent case in which within the last year or two, a batch of about a hundred thousand Martian Egos were imported into this world, finding incarnation, some of them, in the aborigines, as they are called, of Australia, some in the lowest types of Central Africa, the best of them amongst the populations of Central Asia. »
(p.167-68)

4. Charles Leadbeater was a friend of Sinnett, he claimed to have traveled to Mars via clairvoyance and recorded his discoveries in his book "The Inner Life II" (1912), stating, among other things:

« Signs of a very ancient civilization are visible everywhere, for the inhabitants have preserved the tradition of all that was known when the great life-wave of terrestrial humanity occupied the planet, and since then, they have added many other discoveries.
. . .
The Martians have brought their medical and scientific studies to such a state of perfection that diseases have been eliminated, and even the common signs of old age have largely disappeared. Practically no one looks old, and it seems they hardly feel old; yet, after a life somewhat longer than our own, the desire to live gradually fades, and the Martian comes to desire death. »
(Sixth section)

This contradicted Sinnett’s own assertions; while Sinnett maintained that the Martians were very primitive, Leadbeater claimed they were highly evolved.

To address this dichotomy, Sinnett continued to consult mediums and presented his conclusions in his book "Supra-Physical Science" (1919):

« Misled by the fact, discovered by ordinary astronomy, that that planet [Mars] is remarkable for artificial irrigation works on a colossal scale, hasty thinkers have jumped to the conclusion that the race is more advanced than ourselves, and to make the matter more bewildering some clairvoyant observation of Mars resulted in discovering that it is partly occupied by a highly advanced variety of humanity representing a civilisation in some respects in advance of our own.

How is this view compatible with what I thought I had definitely learned, that the population of Mars were the laggards of the earth’s humanity and at a very ignoble state of development, in a condition which we can only think of as one of profound degradation as compared with our own; though the word degradation is not exactly applicable because the Martian condition merely represents one from which early humanity has not yet emerged?

From our point of view it is really a very ignoble and disgusting stage. At that stage the human form has a gorilla-like aspect, short legs, bulky body, long and powerful arms; and the habits of life prevailing are loathsome to our imagination.

There is but little animal life on Mars resembling our own. All that is not quasi-human is still of the reptilian order, and huge creatures of that kind, inhabiting the enormous “canals” (more properly to be thought of as elongated seas, for they are miles in breadth and in some places a mile deep), provide the human population with the food on which they live.

By slow degrees, as even the laggard Martians become fit for something a shade better than the lives they are leading, they are brought over in great groups to the earth and incarnated in the lowest savage types to be found in Central Africa or the interior of Australia. From those conditions, as time goes on, they may gradually ascend to superior races.

How are we to reconcile the view of the Martian population just given with the results of the clairvoyant research?

The explanation of this apparent confusion is to the effect that both stories are true. The bulk of the Martian population does consist of the laggards already described, and when I was getting information concerning them I was simply endeavouring to get a comprehensive view of the way in which humanity was distributed around the septenary chain.

So it was not necessary to inform me, or at all events I was not informed, that over and above the laggard multitude, Mars was actually the scene of incarnation for a considerable body of egos belonging to the “Inner Round.”

This phrase relates to a department of occult teaching of which very little has hitherto been said in any theosophical writings, although the central idea is referred to in some of my own.

In thinking of human evolution we have, first of all, to contemplate its main stream including the sixty thousand million entities constituting the human family; also that wonderful stream of rapid evolution (rapid relatively to the main stream) described as the Path of Initiation.

But we also have to think of a third stream, intermediate, as it were, between the other two, consisting of egos who, by reason of some special karmic qualifications, become, without treading the Path of Initiation, drifted along the normal path of evolution in advance of the great majority.

These egos constituting what has been called the “inner round” people, flit on from planet to planet of the whole chain and get right round it in periods lying within the whole world period (for the majority) of the world from which they started. That is an abstract statement of the principle.

More definitely, it relates to a possibility of evolution that has never arisen in the earlier history of the planetary chain. Inner Rounds can only be thought of as beginning at the period of this world’s current activity. But anyhow, it seems to be the fact that some qualified egos emerging from the variegated civilisation of the Atlantean period, have actually accomplished an Inner Round progress so nearly complete that they are already incarnate on the planet Mars only just behind our own. There, of course, they are enormously superior to the bulk of the laggard population, thus naturally assuming control of the inferior multitude.

But the complications of the story do not end here. The few who actually accomplished the Inner Round progress were reinforced by a considerable number of Atlantean egos (willingly, of course, accepting the task) who were moved backward against the normal stream of evolution, and incarnated on Mars.

One naturally asks: How did their incarnation begin? What parents, among the laggard population, could possibly have been fit to give them birth?

The answer unveils another interesting chapter in the whole intricate story. A Being of exalted dignity, undertaking a task resembling that performed by the “Manu” of a new race on Earth, made a selection amongst the best of the laggard population, and segregating them from the rest, through a long series of generations, brought them up to a relatively superior condition. They became the parents of the incoming Atlantean egos, whose advent, again of course, gave an enormous impulse to the progress of the improving forms.

Obviously, all this work was done a long while ago, but two or three million years have elapsed since the middle period of the Atlantean race, so there has been time available for many things to happen.

Thus, although it is not true that all of the superior race now dominating Mars are strictly speaking Inner Round people, they may all be conveniently thought of as such.

The few who actually were able to hurry round the whole chain of planets, probably came into incarnation on Mars, after the larger number who came back from Earth, and found bodies available of an already improved type.

It would seem that Mr. Leadbeater’s clairvoyant observations were entirely concerned with some of the Inner Round people whom he was enabled to observe.

And the impression he got that they constituted the main body of the Martian population seems, as I understand the matter now, the only mistake embodied in a description he gives, which, while I merely knew that the main body of the Martian population was certainly of the laggard order, appeared to me bewildering in the most distressful fashion.

The Inner Round people are a small minority compared to the multitude below them, but owing to their superiority in other ways they completely dominate the laggards. Whether, in the progress of time, it may be possible that somehow, independently. of super-physical faculties we shall come to know something concerning the Martian people, is a question I will not venture to deal with confidently; but I do understand that some of the Inner Round Martians are keenly interested in the idea of establishing physical plane relations with the Earth, by utilising the finer forces of nature to serve a telegraphic purpose.

When, hitherto, people have vaguely talked about the possibility of getting communications from Mars, every intelligent thinker must have been struck with the absurdity of supposing that the Martians could make themselves intelligible to us without any common language to work with. But all I have now been explaining really dissipates this difficulty.

The Inner Round Martians are sufficiently advanced in evolution, especially those who have actually made an extra circuit of the planetary chain, to have developed amongst them what may be thought of as a Martian White Lodge, a Martian body of adepts capable, as adepts, of communicating with other worlds.

And the communication on that level is already freely established. That state of things accounts for the fact that such information as I have just been putting forward has filtered through to me.We are within sight of very wonderful changes in the human life of this planet, social and spiritual changes of immense importance. And amongst them it seems more than possible that interplanetary communications may be one of the dazzling achievements of science in the future. »
(Ed. 1924, p.103-108)

In summary, Sinnett stated that although the majority of Martians were very primitive, there were also some who were highly evolved.

OBSERVATION

We now know that what Sinnett and Leadbeater said is false and that there is no physical life on Mars; in fact, there is no subtle life either, since Master Kuthumi revealed that "Mars is in a state of obscuration" (SD I, p. 165).

LIFE ON MERCURY ACCORDING TO ALFRED SINNETT

During Alfred Sinnett's time, there was a mistaken belief that the other planets in the solar system were also physically inhabited, just as Earth is.

This, combined with Sinnett's erroneous concept that Mars and Mercury are part of the Earth's planetary chain, led him to conclude that the humanity currently evolving on Earth had previously done so on Mars and would do so in the future on Mercury—all in a physical sense.

« Mercury is preparing for its next human period*. »
(Chapter 7)

And to silence those who believed that physical life could not exist on Mercury because this planet orbits too close to the Sun, Sinnett replied:

« * It may be worth while here to remark for the benefit of people who may be disposed, from physical science reading, to object that Mercury is too near the Sun, and consequently too hot to be a suitable place of habitation for man, that in the oficial report of the Astronomical Department of the United States on the recent "Mount Whitney observations" statements will be found that may check too confident criticisms of occult science along that line.

The results of the Mount Whitney observations on selective absorption of solar rays showed, according to the official reporter, that it would no longer be impossible to suggest the conditions of an atmosphere which should render Mercury habitable at the one extreme of the scale, and Saturn at the other.

We have no concern with Saturn at present, nor, if it were necessary to explain on occult principles the habitability of Mercury, should the task be at- tempted with calculations about selective absorption.

The fact is that ordinary science makes at once too much and too little of the Sun, as the storehouse of force for the solar system, —too much in so far as the heat of planets has a great deal to do with another influence quite distinct from the Sun, an influence Avhich will not be thoroughly understood till more is known than at present about the correlations of heat and magnetism, and of the magnetic, meteoric dust, with which interplanetary space is pervaded.

However, it is enough — to rebut any objection that might be raised against the explanations now in progress, from the point of view of loyal devotees of last year's science — to point out that such objections would be already out of date.

Modern science is very progressive, — this is one of its greatest merits, — but it is not a meritorious habit with modern scientists to think, at each stage of its progress, that all conceptions incompatible with that stage must necessarily be absurd. »
(Chapter 7)

Charles Leadbeater was a friend of Sinnett and claimed that through his clairvoyance he had traveled to Mercury, and what he discovered he recorded in his book "The Inner Life II" (1912):

« Of our future home, Mercury, I know much less than of the planet Mars, because visits to this other planet have been hurried and infrequent.

Many people would think it incredible that life like ours could exist on Mercury, with a sun that appears at least seven times larger than here. But in reality, the heat is not as intense as one would suppose it to be, and I was informed that this is due to a layer of gas located at the outer edges of Mercury's atmosphere, which prevents most of the heat from penetrating.
. . .
The inhabitants of Mercury whom I have seen there are very similar to ourselves, although, as with Mars, they are somewhat smaller.

And the influence of gravity on both Mars and Mercury is less than half of what it is on Earth. But while on Mars I didn't notice any particular way in which this lower gravity had been exploited, I did observe that on Mercury the doors of houses are quite high off the ground.

So if those doors were located on Earth, we would need to perform a great feat of gymnastics to reach them, but on Mercury, only a small jump is required.

And another thing that greatly surprised me is that all the inhabitants of this planet are born with their etheric sight already awakened. I remember that this peculiarity caught my attention when I observed a child watching the movements of a crawling creature. I saw that when this creature entered his dwelling, the Mercurian child could still see its movements, even when the creature was already deep underground. »
(Sixth Section)

Sinnett believed what Leadbeater said, and that is why he changed his explanation. Instead of continuing to claim that Mercury "was preparing for its next human period," Sinnett declared that there were already some humans (the most advanced) physically living on Mercury.

And that is why in his book "Collected Fruits of Occult Teaching" (1919) he wrote:

« Humanity is now scattered: one part is already established on Mercury, while another part lags behind on Mars. »
(p.167)

NOTE

We now know that what Sinnett and Leadbeater said is false and that there is no physical life on Mercury, and in fact, there is no subtle life either, since Master Kuthumi revealed that "Mercury is only just beginning to emerge from its state of obscuration" (SD I, p. 165)

LIFE IN MERCURY ACCORDING TO CHARLES LEADBEATER

Leadbeater pretended to have his clairvoyance very developed and he affirmed that with his clairvoyance he had visited Mars and Mercury, and in his book "The Inner Life" Vol 2 (1912) he related what he discovered.

In the previous article to this, I detailed all the falsehoods that Leadbeater said about "life on Mars" and here below I detail the falsehoods that Leadbeater wrote about "life on Mercury":

« Of our future home, Mercury, we know much less than of Mars, for visits to it have been hurried and infrequent.

(Note: this is false that Mercury is the next planet that we are going to inhabit because that lie was invented by Leadbeater based on the mistake that Mr. Sinnett made.)

Many people would think it incredible that life such as ours could exist on Mercury, with a sun that appears at least seven times as large as it does here. The heat, however, is not at all so intense as would be supposed. I am informed that this is due to a layer of gas on the outskirts of the Mercurian atmosphere, which prevents most of the heat from penetrating.

(This is also completely false because the solar wind eliminated Mercury's entire atmosphere and the surface temperature during the day reaches 840 degrees Fahrenheit. This is enough to melt the lead!)

We are told that the most destructive of all possible storms on Mercury is one which even for a moment disturbs the stability of this gaseous envelope. When that happens a kind of whirl-pool is set up on it, and for a moment a shaft of direct sunlight comes from the sun through its vortex. Such a shaft instantly destroys whatever life comes in its way, and burns up in a moment everything combustible. Fortunately such storms are rare.

(This is also false because if there is no atmosphere on Mercury, there can be no storms either.)

The inhabitants whom I have seen there are much like ourselves, though again somewhat smaller.

The influence of gravity both on Mars and Mercury is less than half what it is on earth, but while on Mars I did not notice any particular way in which advantage had been taken of this. I observed on Mercury that the doors of the houses were quite a considerable height from the ground, needing what for us would be a respectable gymnastic feat to reach them, though on Mercury it is only a slight spring which is required.

All the inhabitants of that planet are from birth possessed of etheric sight; I remember that the fact was first brought to my notice by observing a child who was watching the movements of some crawling creature; and I saw that when it entered its abode he was still able to follow its movements, even when it was deep down under the ground. »

(This text is found at the end of the sixth section.)

OBSERVATIONS

In the beginning of the past century, Leadbeater was able to cajole the public because space exploration had not yet taken place. But with the scientific discoveries, the statements that Leadbeater made were demolished, demonstrating with that his enormous charlatanism.

But the Adyar Theosophical Society, taking a tremendously hypocritical attitude, instead of confronting the reality that Leadbeater had been a very deceitful man, this organization preferred to remain silent and remove this text from the following editions to try to hide the charlatanism of Leadbeater.

However, the old editions are still a proof of how big deceitful Leadbeater was, and you can see in this link the second edition published by Adyar in 1923, and you can download the facsimile of this text in this other link.

And so, check for yourself that Leadbeater really wrote all those lies demonstrating his immense charlatanism.

But besides, it was not necessary to wait until science confirmed it, to realize that Leadbeater was a liar, because anyone who had studied real Theosophy would have noticed that Leadbeater was inventing falsehoods, because in the Secret Doctrine one of the Transhimalayan Masters specified that Mercury is currently in a state of pralaya ("death"), since he wrote:

« Mercury just beginning to get out of a state of obscuration»
(SD I, p.165)

And this means that since for many millions of years ago, there is NO life on Mercury, neither on its physical plane, nor on its subtle planes.

And keep in mind that this assertion was assured by the Master in 1888, and it took 86 years for the US Mariner 10 space probe confirm what the Master had long ago affirmed. And also keep in mind that he said this assertion at a time when people were deeply convinced that the other planets of the solar system were also inhabited like Earth is.

And this shows the great difference in quality that exists between the Original Theosophy and the all-disfigured version full of errors and lies that Leadbeater and Annie Besant later invented.

LIFE IN MARS ACCORDING TO CHARLES LEADBEATER

Leadbeater pretended to have his clairvoyance very developed and he affirmed that with his clairvoyance he had visited Mars and Mercury, and in his book "The Inner Life" Vol 2 (1912) he related what he discovered:

«
MARS AND ITS INHABITANTS

The present condition of the planet Mars is by no means unpleasant. It is a smaller planet than the Earth and more advanced in age. I do not mean that it is actually older in years, for the whole chain of worlds came into existence — not simultaneously indeed — but within a certain definite area of time. But being smaller it lives its life as a planet more quickly.

Mars cooled more rapidly from the nebulous condition, and it has passed through its other stages with corresponding celerity.

When humanity occupied it in the third round it was in much the same condition as is the Earth at the present time — that is to say, there was much more water than land on its surface. Now it has passed into comparative old age, and the water surface is far less than that of the land.

(We know that this asseveration is false because orbital spacecrafts have discovered that there is NO water on the surface of Mars outside the frozen water at the poles.

And it is also false that in the past the terrestrial humanity had lived on Mars and that in the future we are going to live on Mercury. This falsehood was invented by Leadbeater based on the error that Mr. Sinnett wrote, who assured that the terrestrial planetary chain is also composed by Mars and Mercury. But this assertion is false because that would be tantamount to affirming that we are composed of three physical bodies, which is totally absurd!!!

Furthermore, the Masters pointed out that all the evolution of humanity through the seven rounds takes place on Earth and that humanity only emerged on the physical plane in the fourth round, see link.

This means that Leadbeater has no idea what the Masters really taught and he is only inventing on the falsehood that his friend Mr. Sinnett said.

But let's proceed with the supposed "clairvoyants discoveries" that Leadbeater claimed to have revealed.)

Large areas of it are at present desert, covered with a bright orange sand which gives the planet the peculiar hue by which we so readily recognise it. Like that of many of our own deserts, the soil is probably fertile enough if the great irrigation system were extended to it, as it no doubt would have been if humanity had remained upon it until now.

The present population, consisting practically of members of the inner round, is but a small one, and they find plenty of room for themselves to live without great effort, in the equatorial lands, where the temperature is highest and there is no difficulty as to water.

(At the beginning of the 20th century, when Leadbeater wrote this text, people believed that the other planets of the solar system were also physically inhabited as Earth, and based on that erroneous belief, Leadbeater narrated all his "clairvoyance".)

THE MARS CHANNELS

The great system of canals which has been observed by terrestrial astronomers was constructed by the second order of moon-men when they last occupied the planet, and its general scheme is to take advantage of the annual melting of enormous masses of ice at the outer fringe of the polar snow-caps.

It has been observed that some of the canals are double, but the double line is only occasionally apparent; that is due to the fore-thought of the Martian engineers. The country is on the whole level, and they had great dread of inundations.

(This is false since Mars has a relief much more pronounced than Earth, with several mountains that duplicate and even triplicate the height of Everest.)

And wherever these the Martian engineers thought there was reason to fear too great an outrush of water under exceptional circumstances the second parallel canal was constructed to receive any possible overflow and carry it away safely.

The actual canals themselves are not visible to terrestrial telescopes; what is seen is the belt of verdure which appears in a tract of country on each side of the canal only at the time when the water pours in. Just as Egypt exists only because of the Nile, so do large districts on Mars exist only because of these canals.

From each of them radiate at intervals water-ways, which run some miles into the surrounding country and are then subdivided into thousands of tiny streamlets, so that a strip of country a hundred miles in width is thoroughly irrigated.

In this area are forests and cultivated fields, and vegetation of all sorts stands forth in the greatest profusion, making upon the surface of the planet a dark belt which is visible to us even forty million miles away when the planet is at its nearest and favourably situated.

(The first astronomers who observed Mars through their telescopes perceived dark lines, and the prestigious American astronomer Percival Lowell came to the conclusion that these lines were channels that had been built by intelligent beings to carry water from the polar ice caps towards the equatorial regions.

Map of Mars drawn by Percival Lowell

And Leadbeater relied on that idea to elaborate his own narrative, but later it was discovered that those dark lines had their origin in an optical effect produced by the imperfections of the telescope lenses of that time, showing with that one more time the profound charlatanism of Leadbeater.)

HOW ARE THE MARTIANS?

Mars is much farther from the centre of the system than we are, and consequently the sun appears to its inhabitants scarcely more than half the size that it does to us. Nevertheless the climate of the inhabited portions of the planet is very good, the temperature during the day at the equator being usually about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, although there are not many nights of the year when there is not a touch of frost.

Clouds are almost unknown, the sky being for most of the year entirely clear. The country is therefore to a large extent free from the unpleasantness of rain or snow. The Martian day is a few minutes longer than out own and their year is nearly twice as long as ours, and the variation of the seasons in the inhabited part is but slight.

In physical appearance the Martians are not unlike ourselves, except that they are considerably smaller. The tallest men are not above five feet in height and the majority are two or three inches shorter.

According to our ideas they are somewhat broad in proportion, having very great chest capacity - a fact which may possibly be due to the rarity of the air and the consequent necessity of deep breathing in order fully to oxygenate the blood.

The whole civilised population of Mars is one race, and there is practically no difference in features or complexion, except that, just as among ourselves, there are blondes and brunettes, some of the people having a faintly yellowish skin and black hair, while the majority have yellow hair and blue or violet eyes — somewhat Norwegian in appearance.

They dress mostly in brilliant colours, and both sexes wear an almost shapeless garment of some very soft material which falls straight down from the shoulders down to the feet. Generally the feet are bare, though they sometimes use a sort of metal sandal or slipper, with a thong round the ankle.

THE HOUSES OF THE MARTIANS

They are very fond of flowers, of which there is a great variety, and their towns are built on the general plan of the garden-city, the houses usually being one-storeyed only, but built round inner courtyards and straggling over a great deal of ground.

These houses look exteriorly as though built of coloured glass, and indeed the material which is used is transparent, but it is somehow so fluted that while the persons inside enjoy an almost unimpeded view of their gardens, no one from outside can see what is going on in the house.

The houses are not built up in blocks, but the material is melted and poured into moulds; if a house is to be built, a sort of double mould is first made in metal faced with cement, and then the curious glass-like substance is melted and poured into this mould, and when it is cold and hardened the moulds are taken away, and the house is finished except for a certain amount of polishing of the surface.

The doors are not exactly like ours, since they have no hinges or bolts, and are opened and shut by treading on certain spots in the ground, either without or within. They do not swing on hinges, but run back into the walls on each side. All these doors and all furniture and fittings are of metal. Wood seems to be used scarcely at all.

THE LANGUAGE OF MARTIANS

There is only one language in use over the whole planet, except for the few savage tribes, and this language, like everything in their world, has not grown up as ours have done, but has been constructed to save time and trouble. It has been simplified to the last possible extent, and it has no irregularities of any sort.

They have two methods of recording their thoughts. One is to speak into a small box with a mouthpiece on one side of it, something like that of a telephone. Each word so spoken is by the mechanism expressed as a kind of complicated sign upon a little plate of metal, and when the message has been spoken the plate falls out and is found to be marked in crimson characters, which can easily be read by those who are familiar with the scheme.

The other plan is actually to write by hand, but that is an enormously more difficult acquirement, for the script is a very complicated kind of shorthand which can be written as rapidly as one can speak. It is in this latter script that all their books are printed, and these latter are usually in the shape of rolls made of very thin flexible metal.

The engraving of them is extremely minute, and it is customary to read it through a magnifier, which is fixed conveniently upon a stand. In the stand there is machinery which unrolls the scroll before the magnifier at any desired rate, so that one read without needing to touch the book at all.

HOW IS MARS SOCIETY?

On every hand one sees signs of a very old civilization, for the inhabitants have preserved the tradition of all that was known when the great life-wave of humanity occupied the planet, and have since added to it many other discoveries.

Electricity seems to be practically the sole motive power, and all sorts of labour-saving machines are universally employed.

The people are on the whole distinctly indolent, especially after they have passed their first youth. But the comparatively small size of the population enables them to live very easily.

They have trained various kinds of domestic animals to a far higher condition of intelligent co-operation than has yet been achieved upon earth, so that a great deal of servant's and gardener's work is done by these creatures with comparatively little direction.

One autocratic ruler governs the whole planet, but the monarchy is not hereditary. Polygamy is practised, but it is the custom to hand over all children to the State at a very early age to be reared and educated, so that among the vast majority of the people there is no family tradition whatever, and no one knows who is his father and mother.

There is no law compelling this, but it is considered so decidedly the right thing to do and the best for the children that the few families who choose to live somewhat more as we do, and to educate their children at home, are always regarded as selfishly injuring their prospects for the sake of what is considered mere animal affection.

The state is thus in the position of universal guardian and schoolmaster, and the school authorities of each district are instructed carefully to sort the children according to the aptitudes they display, and their line of life is decided for them in this manner.

A very wide range of choice, however, being allowed the individual child as he approaches years of discretion. But children who show at the same time great intellect and wide general capacity are set apart from the rest, and trained with a view of becoming members of the ruling class.

HOW IS MARS GOVERNMENT?

The King has under him what may be called viceroys of large districts, and they in turn have under them governors of smaller districts, and so on down to what would be equivalent here to the head man of a village.

All these officials are chosen by the King from this group of specially educated children, and when the time of his own death is considered to be approaching it is from them or from among the already appointed officials that he chooses his successor.

They have brought their scientific medical studies to such perfection that disease has been eliminated, and even the ordinary signs of the approach of old age have been to a large extent got rid of. Practically no one appears old, and it would seem that they hardly feel old; but, after a life somewhat longer than our own the desire to live gradually fades away, and the man dies.

It is quite customary for a man who is losing interest and feels that death is approaching (this corresponds to what we would call a centenarian) to apply to a certain scientific department which corresponds to what we might call a school of surgery, and ask to be put painlessly to death —  a request which is always granted.

All these rulers are autocratic, each within his own sphere, but appeal to a higher official is always possible, though the right is not frequently exercised, because the people usually prefer to acquiesce in any fairly reasonable decision rather than take the trouble involved in an appeal.

The rulers on the whole seem to perform their duties fairly well, but again one gets the impression that they do so not so much from any pre-eminent sense of right or justice as to avoid the trouble that would certainly ensue from a fragrantly unjust decision.

HOW IS MARS RELIGION?

One of the most remarkable things about this people is that they have absolutely no religion. There are no churches, no temple, no places of worship of any sort whatever, no priest, no ecclesiastical power. The accepted belief of the people is what we should call scientific materialism.

Nothing is true but what can be scientifically demonstrated, and to believe anything which cannot be so demonstrated is regarded as not only the height of folly, but even as a positive crime, because it is considered a danger to the public peace.

Martian history in the remote past was not unlike our own, and there are stories of religious persecutions, and of peoples whose beliefs were of so uncomfortable a nature that they forced them not only into feverish energy for themselves, but also into perpetual interference with the liberty of thought of other people.

Martian public opinion is quite determined that there shall never again be any opportunity for the introduction of disturbing factors of that sort, and that physical science and the lower reason shall reign supreme; and though there, as here, events have occurred which material science cannot explain, people find it best to say nothing about them.

THE MARTIAN OCCULTISTS

Nevertheless on Mars, as in other places, there are a certain number of people who know better than this, and many centuries ago a few of these joined themselves together in a secret brotherhood to meet and discuss these matters.

Very gradually and with infinite precaution, they took other recruits into this charmed circle, and so came into existence, in this most materialistic of worlds, a secret society which not only believed in super-physical worlds but knew practically of their existence, for its members took up the study of mesmerism and spiritualism, and many of them developed a good deal of power.

At the present time this secret society is very widely spread, and at the head of it at this moment is a pupil of one of our Masters. Even now after all these centuries its existence is not officially known to the authorities, but as a matter of fact they something more than a suspicion of it, and they have learned to fear it.

None of its members are actually identified as such, but many are strongly suspected, and it seems to have been observed that when any of these strongly suspected people have in the past been injured or unjustly put to death, the persons who were concerned in bringing about that result have invariably died prematurely and mysteriously, though never in any case has their death been traceable to any physical-plane action on the part of the suspected member.

Consequently, although such a belief is no doubt somewhat of an infringement of the principles of pure reason by which everything is supposed to be governed, it has come to be generally understood that it is safest not to pry too closely into the beliefs of people who seem to differ in some degree from the majority, so long as they do not openly make profession of anything which would be considered subversive of the good morals of materialism.

Finally I must point out that driven far away from the pleasant equatorial regions into inhospitable lands and impenetrable forests, there still exist some remnants of the savage tribes who are descended from those left behind when the great life-wave left Mars for the earth.

These are primitive savages at a lower stage than any now living on the exterior of our earth, though bearing some resemblance to one of our interior evolutions. Some at least of the members of the secret society have learnt how to cross without great difficulty the space which separates us from Mars, and have therefore at various times tried to manifest themselves through mediums at spiritualist séances, or have been able, by the methods which they have learnt, to impress their ideas upon poets and novelists.

(All these descriptions are pure fantasies of Leadbeater, who had a big imagination, but these asseverations catalog him as a science fiction writer and NOT as an esoteric researcher.

And Leadbeater ended cynically saying)

The information which I have given above is based upon observation and inquiry during various visits to the planet; yet nearly all of it might be found in the works of various writers within the last thirty or forty years, and in all such cases it has been impressed by someone from Mars, although the very fact of such impression was (at least in some cases) quite unknown to the physical writer. »

Even in his preface (p.3) Leadbeater praised himself that he was revealing exclusive information, since he wrote: "many of the chapters contain facts which have not been published before, such as Mars and Its Inhabitants".

But besides, it was not necessary to wait until science confirmed it, to realize that Leadbeater was a liar, because anyone who had studied real Theosophy would have noticed that Leadbeater was inventing falsehoods, because in the Secret Doctrine one of the Transhimalayan Masters specified that Mars is currently in a state of pralaya ("death"), since he wrote:

« It is quite correct that Mars is in a state of obscuration at present»
(SD I, p.165)

And this means that since for many millions of years ago, there is NO life on Mars, neither on its physical plane, nor on its subtle planes.

And keep in mind that this assertion was assured by the Master in 1888, and it took 83 years for the Russian Mars 2 space probe confirm what the Master had long ago affirmed. And also keep in mind that he said this assertion at a time when people were deeply convinced that the other planets of the solar system were also inhabited like Earth is.

And this shows the great difference in quality that exists between the Original Theosophy and the all-disfigured version full of errors and lies that later elaborated Leadbeater and Annie Besant.
