In early 1998, Carlos Castaneda's health deteriorated greatly due to liver cancer that was killing him, until he finally passed away on April 27, 1998, at the age of 72.
The death certificate
Castaneda's death certificate was signed by Dr. Angelica Duenas, who reported that his death occurred at 3 am this day.
The certificate indicates that Castaneda's cause of death was metabolic encephalopathy over a period of two days, brought on by liver failure over a period of two weeks, due to hepatocellular cancer over a period of ten months, i.e., since July 1997.
That certificate contains several lies:
It says that Castaneda had never been married, which is false since he had been married at least four times.
It also states that he is of Brazilian origin, as are his parents, which is also false because they were in reality Peruvian.
It also appears that Castaneda is of Caucasian race, which is also false because in reality he was Andean.
It
also appears that the informant (presumably regarding his death) was
Talia Bey, who presented herself as his niece, which is not true. Talia
was not related to Castaneda; she was the president of Cleargreen (the
company Castaneda founded to market his teachings) and was one of the
women who disappeared shortly afterward.
His cremation
Castaneda's body was cremated this same day by the Spalding Mortuary Inc. in Culver City.
Carol told Amy Wallace that she wore a mourning dress when she went to the funeral to arrange the cremation.
The ashes were delivered the next day.
OBSERVATIONS
But his death in a banal way indicated that Castaneda had failed as a nagual, and even that he had actually been a fraud.
And
it is for this reason that despite the evidence of the death
certificate and the cremation, the leaders of Cleargreen (which is the
organization that Castaneda founded to spread his teachings) and in
particular his 'nagual woman' Carol Tifggs, initially did not inform the
public of Castaneda's death, and later when they could no longer hide
this event, they lied saying that Castaneda had achieved liberation by
burning from within as his master Don Juan did.
