WHAT CHARLES LEADBEATER SAID ABOUT THE FIRST WORLD WAR

On this matter, researcher Gregory Tillett commented as follows (and I added my comments in purple):

While the members of the Theosophical Society of Adyar were tremendously fascinated with the promise of the imminent Coming of the Lord Christ-Maitreya; the world, on the other hand, was concerned about the grim events taking place in Europe, and on July 28, 1914, World War I officially began.

Those who viewed war as a completely undesirable and destructive process could find comfort in the words of Leadbeater, who assured that this war was part of the Divine Plan for the Coming of the Lord Christ-Maitreya.

« Realize that this Great War is part of the world preparation and that, however terrible it may be, there is yet the other side – the enormous good that is being done to individuals. »
(The Hidden Side of Christian Festivals, p.479)

(This statement is a lie because "Lord Christ-Maitreya" does not exist, since he was a fictional character invented by Leadbeater to promote Krishnamurti as the next messiah.)

Leadbeater proclaimed that the War was the result of the “Lords of the Dark Face” battling against the Powers promoting evolution, as they had done in Atlantis some 13,000 years ago, and, indeed “those fighting in World War I, were the same people who fought in Atlantis”.

(This statement is also false, since Master Kuthumi pointed out that in Atlantis white magicians fought against black magicians, while in World War I ordinary people fought.)

Bismarck

Leadbeater proclaimed that Germany was obsessed with evil and controlled by a few of the “Lords of the Dark face”, including Bismarck, with whom Leadbeater had spoken at some length on the astral plane.

(See "The Hidden Side of Christian Festivals", pp. 466-470)

(This is another lie because historical data shows that Leadbeater did not possess any clairvoyance.)

According to Leadbeater, Blavatsky taught that Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898), the conservative Prussian statesman who dominated German and European affairs from the 1860s until 1890 and engineered a series of wars in the 1860s that unified the German states into a powerful German Empire under Prussian leadership, was an occultist, and claimed that Bismarck had planted magnetic talismans at the four corners of Germany to prevent resistance to the German armies.

(See "Australia and New Zealand: The Home of a New Sub-Race", Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar, 1916, p. 66)

And on this subject Leadbeater added:

« Read the German literature, and you will see perfectly well the direction in which for forty years and more its people have been going. Because of their intense pride, because of the teaching of brutality and of force, of blood and iron instead of the law of love, they have laid themselves open to this dreadful obsession, and some of the great Lords of the Dark Face have again taken their place among them.

Prince Bismarck was such an one, as Madame Blavatsky told us long ago. While he was still alive he laid his plans for the subjugation of Europe. You may be thankful he has not survived till the present, for his plans were far wiser than those of the men who have followed him.

Long ago Madame Blavatsky explained to us that he had considerable occult knowledge, and that before the war with France, in 1870, he had traveled physically to certain points to the north, the south, the east and the west of France, and had there cast spells of some sort; or made magnetic centres, with the object of preventing effective resistance to the German armies. Undoubtedly the French collapse at the time was so complete and unexpected that it seemed to need some unusual explanation. »
(The Great War, p.4)

(I haven't found that Blavatsky said that, so those assertions were surely another lie invented by Leadbeater.)

Leadbeater hated pacifists and was in favor of killing

Leadbeater disliked peace advocates, whom he considered “well-meaning but ignorant fanatics who talked peace at any price”.

The Indian doctrine of ahimsa, or harmlessness, which inspired Theosophists to become vegetarians, anti-vivisectionists and opponents of the wearing of furs, did not inspire Leadbeater to oppose the killing of Germans.

On the contrary, Leadbeater declared:

« I am stating facts based on knowledge and not on supposition when I say that it is actually a kindness to these ruffians to kill their bodies, for in that way we can save their souls from this madness; we actually help in carrying out the training which will show them that they must not again let themselves be misled and hypnotized as they have been this time… They are simply dangerous wild beasts who must be sent back into the savage tribes to which they belong.
. . .
And it was not only to the advantage of the Germans and their savage allies to die, it was equally advantageous for the Allies: To die thus is to gain, for by that one supreme act of self-sacrifice they make advancement which might otherwise take them twenty lives. »
(The Hidden Side of Christian Festivals, pp. 481 and 483)

(With these statements, Leadbeater reveals his true face: an Englishman who sees the Germans as enemies and not as brothers; and this shows you that, contrary to what he claimed, Leadbeater was not spiritual.)

According to Leadbeater, the cause of the war was not, despite popular opinion, political, but a massive case of possession or obsession, whose "exorcism" consisted of the indiscriminate killing of the enemy:

« The cause of the War was not, despite popular opinion, political, but a massive example of possession or obsession, the “exorcism” of which was the wholesale slaughter of the enemy:

The kindest thing that we can do for them is to destroy their physical bodies, so that they may be saved from further and still more awful crime, that the devil-ridden egoes may be set free after their appalling failure – free to begin again to climb the ladder of evolution from the depths of savagery into which they have allowed their lower vehicles to be cast. »
(The Hidden Side of Christian Festivals, p. 474)

(Leadbeater was fine with killing people.)

Leadbeater's ravings about the war

War, being "one of God's periodical examinations of His people”, was to be seen as a challenge and a “wonderful opportunity”.  If the challenge was not met, the results would possibly follow the dire course which led to the destruction of Atlantis, in which, so Leadbeater discovered from the Akashic records, sixty-five million people died in twenty-four hours.

But Leadbeater was confident that the Allies would triumph, proclaiming them to be “in the very truth the Sword of the Lord,” because this was a “holy war.”

Those who died as heroes had the great consolation of knowing that they might be reborn in the new sub-race, and Leadbeater explained this whenever he expressed his sympathy to Theosophists whose sons were killed.

But his own work was more subtle:  he patrolled the battle-fields in his astral body, accompanied by a troop of “invisible helpers”, assisting the recently dead

(See "The Hidden Side of Christian Festivals", p. 481)

(Leadbeater displays the typical blind attitude of claiming that the side he belong to is "good" and "supported by God"; while the opposing side are "bad" and "dominated by dark forces."

And this claim he made about "helping with his astral body" is another lie because Leadbeater did not demonstrate the ability to project his astral body.)

Colonel G.F. George Frederick) Braund (1866-1915), commander of the 2nd Battalion, formerly a member of the TS and the ES in Sydney, who had been shot and killed at Gallipoli on May 4 1915 by one of his own sentries when he failed to to answer a challenge, was put at the head of the “new department of work”, that is, the “invisible helpers” during the War, and assisted in the selection of those amongst the recently dead who would renounce Devachan, or heaven, and be reborn at once.

Leadbeater’s account of “invisible helpers” can be found in C.W. Leadbeater Invisible Helpers Theosophical Publishing Society, London, 1896.

And amongst the other souls who agreed to quick rebirth to assist in the work were King Edward VII (1841-1910), and the British General Lord Roberts of Kandahar (1832-1914); during the War they were reborn as women and joined the Army.

(This was stated by Jinarajadasa, who was Leadbeater's protégé, and what he said was transcribed in the Letter to EST No. 11, December 1941, pp. 3-4)

(Most likely, those claims are also lies.)

Leadbeater's writings on the war

The World War I became almost an obsession for Leadbeater, who spoke extensively about it, integrating it into his scheme for the evolution of the world.

Among his writings dedicated to this subject are:

"The Great War," Adyar Pamphlet No 199, Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar, 1916; reprinted from The Theosophist, February 1916, rreprinted 1920.

"An Occult View of the War," Theosophical Publishing House, London, 1916.

"The Coming of the World-Teacher and Death, War and Evolution" is a book of extracts from lectures and writings by Leadbeater, with partial contributions from Annie Besant and other authors. Selected and arranged by Mary E. Rocke. London: G. Allen & Unwin, 1917.

"The Hidden Side of Christian Festivals," St Alban Press, Sydney, 1920. In particular Part III entitled "Speeches during the War".

It should be noted that this section does not appear in all editions of that book, although it is listed in the index. It was removed from the revised version published in 1973. Presumably, this section was omitted because it contained offensive comments. For example:

« These German soldiers under their present obsession are not men but fiends; no demon from the lowest pit of the imaginary medieval hells can rejoice in bestial cruelty more than they. The kindest thing that we can do is to destroy their physical bodies so that they may be saved from further and more awful crime. »
(p. 474)

But however unpleasant they may seem today, those were the sentiments Leadbeater vehemently defended, and his racism was clearly evident in many of his works.

CONCLUSION

This is another example of how deranged, lier and delusional Charles Leadbeater was.
