In 1882 Blavatsky and Olcott purchased an 27 acres plot of land known as "The Huddlestone Family Gardens" where this family had built their country house..
This
place became the Headquarters of the Theosophical Society, and later when in
1895 the Theosophical Society divided into two organizations, this place became
the Headquarters of the Theosophical Society presided over by Olcott and his
successors.
Adyar
is a town located south of the Indian city Chennai, former Madras, in the state
of Tamil Nadu.
Initially
there was only this big house and two cabins, but over time more buildings have
been added: the Adyar publishing house, the Adyar museum, etc.
And
the land has also been expanded much further, by the end of 1911 Annie Besant
had expanded the Adyar property to 253 acres. The land is located next to
the Adyar River and is mostly made up of gardens.
All
of this has been achieved with donations made by members.
