Edith
Penelope Mary Lutyens (1908-1999) was an English writer who is best known for her biographical
books about Jiddu Krishnamurti and the meticulous information she
provided on the rise and fall of the movement that formed around him and which
prophesied "the imminent return of the Lord Christ-Maitreya, the Teacher
of the World."
A movement
that was essentially instigated by Charles Leadbeater, but with Annie Besant complicity,
who at that time was the president of the Theosophical Society, Adyar.
Mary's
mother became interested in theosophy and a close friend with Annie Besant, who
asked her to take care of Krishnamurti and her brother Nitya, who moved to her
home in London.
This is how
Mary knew Krishnamurti from when she was a little girl of three years, and he
was a teenager of 15 years, until his death, since she kept in contact with him
until he passed away in 1986, at the age of 90.
So, Mary Lutyens knew
Krishnamurti very well, and therefore she was very capable of narrating his
life, which she narrated in the following books:
Be Young
In this book, Mary recounts her life and the
experiences she had with the Adyar Theosophical Society. It was originally
published by Rupert Hart-Davis, London, in 1959.

Krishnamurti: The Years of Awakening
In this book she covers the period from Krishnamurti's
birth in 1895 to 1933. It was originally published by John Murray in 1975.
Krishnamurti: The Years of Fulfilment
In this second book, she covers the years 1933 to
1980. It was originally published by John Murray in 1983.
Krishnamurti: The Open Door
In this third volume, she covers from 1980 to Krishnamurti's
death in 1986. It was originally published by John Murray in 1988.
The Life and Death of Krishnamurti
This book is a summary of the previous trilogy. It was
originally published by John Murray in 1990; and later reprinted by St Martins
Press, in 1991, with the title "Krishnamurti: his life and death".
The
child Krishna
In this book Mary details the first fourteen years of
Krishnamurti's life. It was published by Krishnamurti Foundation Trust in 1995.
Krishnamurti and the Rajagopals
This book is the defense that Mary Lutyens made
towards Krishnamurti against the accusations that Radha Rajagopal Slos put in
her book "Living in the shadow of J. Krishnamurti". It was published
by Krishnamurti Foundation of America, Ojai, CA, in 1996.
J. Krishnamurti: a life
It is a compilation of the previous trilogy and was
published in India by Penguin Books in 2005.
NOTES
Her mother
also wrote a book titled "Candles in the Sun" published by Rupert
Hart-Davis, Londo, in 1957, in which she recounted her own experience with
Krishnamurti and the Theosophical Society.
And her
sister Elisabeth Lutyens (the British composer) also wrote a book called
"A Golden Fishbowl" published in by Cassell, London, in 1972, where
she also recounts those events from her own experience.
